Golden Eagles Have Unbeaten Streak Ended In OT

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team saw its eight-match unbeaten string come to a disappointing end Sunday.

The Golden Eagles couldn't hold a 1-0 second-half lead and fell to Grand Canyon, 2-1, in overtime in a non-conference battle at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (9-3-2) had gone 7-0-1 in its last eight matches and hadn't lost since the opening California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Sonoma State on Sept. 7.

Cal State L.A. enjoyed an 18-8 advantage in shots, but the Antelopes (6-4-3), after surviving an early Golden Eagle onslaught, started getting more chances as the game wore on.

The Golden Eagles also had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. had an 11-2 edge in shots in the first half and had three golden opportunities in the first 15 minutes of the game. Morten Marthinsen headed a shot that just went over the crossbar 10 minutes into the game and Jason Swope drilled a left-footed shot a minute later that also went over the goal.

Marthinsen had another good opportunity 15 minutes into the contest that sailed just wide.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute. Marthinsen was fouled and Rufino Franco centered the ball on a free kick and it was headed in by Patrick Thurston, who scored his third goal of the season.

The Antelopes (6-4-3), though, picked up their game after allowing the goal and tied the game in the 55th minute. Dusan Radisavljevic crossed the ball into the box and after the ball went through some traffic, an onrushing Vladic Milenkovic knocked it into the right corner of the net from the left side of the box.

The game stayed tied at 1-1 into the first overtime when the Antelopes got the game-winner. Radisavljevic was able to head the ball into the net just before Cal State L.A. goalie Tobias Hummel could punch it out of the air. Milenkovic picked up the assist on the game-winner.
Adam Aguilar had six saves for the Antelopes, while Hummel made three saves for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will return to conference action on Friday with a home game against UC San Diego.
